The theme of this course is Gender, Globalization, and Diversity in Contemporary Japan.
This course looks at how contemporary Japanese society is changing in the context of globalization and demographic pressures (population aging and shrinking) with a special focus on the consequences of these changes for gender and diversity. From welfare to employment, immigration to gender equity, contemporary Japan is facing a range of policy and social issues that will shape Japanese society in the coming decades. How is Japan adapting to our changing world, and what challenges and hurdles remain going forward?
The format of this course is a series of lectures taught by various lecturers with a range of areas of expertise, giving the course an interdisciplinary dimension. Due to ongoing border restrictions and concerns about the spread of coronavirus, the course will be held online over Zoom, Moodle and Slack. Ochanomizu University students will either join online or in the classroom. The course will be primarily conducted through real-time lectures, with a small number (2 or 3 periods) of on-demand components. All real-time lectures will be held between 9:00 and 12:10 Japan Standard Time, with precise details to be determined later.

The aim of this course is to develop advanced academic writing skills.
The early part of the course involves close readings of academic essays and case studies primarily about the thematic content and representation of constructs, such as race, gender, class and culture, in films. The purpose of this is to develop students' awareness of developing an argument in an academic essay which is based on evidence from the primary source (the film) and secondary sources (critics' reviews and essays). As a result of these readings, students will be able to develop their own argument for a topic of their choice and will be able to write an academic essay on that topic. Previous students have explored questions such as: What themes are prevalent in the anime of Hayao Miyazaki? Is Top Gun really a propaganda film? How is gender represented in Stephen King's 'Carrie'?
In the middle part of the course, students will focus on the following important aspects of academic writing: Writing citations and references, writing an argument outline, text formatting, text flow (old to new information structure) and the academic register. Students will begin planning and researching their own argumentative essays.
In the last part of the course, students will be expected to write their essays incrementally and bring their writing to class. Then, students will read and comment on one another's writing, and the instructor will provide feedback. Through a cycle of writing, review, revision and rewriting, students will complete their argumentative essays.
